Bidding: At the start of each hand, you and your partner bid the number of "tricks" (books) you expect to win.
The Objective: Win at least the number of tricks you bid. The first team to reach 250 points wins the game.
Spades as Trumps: Spades are always the trump suit. However, they cannot be played to lead a trick until they have been "broken" (played on a previous trick where the player couldn't follow the lead suit).
Following Suit: Players must play a card of the same suit as the lead card if they have one. If not, they can play a spade (to trump) or any other card (to discard).
Communicate via Bids: Pay close attention to your partner's bid. If they bid high, they have a strong hand; if they bid "Nil" (zero tricks), your primary goal changes to protecting them from winning any tricks.
Count the Spades: Keep track of how many spades have been played. Knowing when the high spades (Ace, King, Queen) are gone allows you to turn your lower spades into winning tricks.
Avoid Sandbagging: Winning too many tricks over your bid results in "sandbags." Accumulating 10 sandbags results in a 100-point penalty. It’s often better to let an opponent take a trick if you have already met your bid.
Watch the "Nil" Bid: If an opponent bids Nil, try to force them to take a trick by playing your lowest cards in a suit they might be void in.
Strategic Leading: Leading with a "singleton" (the only card of a suit in your hand) can be a great way to "break" your hand early so you can use your spades to trump that suit later.
